Linden, having awakened hours before he would have chosen, was not very alert when he joined Bill, Chuck and Jack (Paul was absent) for our normal Thursday breakfast. After greetings, normal small talk and ordering our food, Chuck gave the blessing when the food arrived and, later, delivered the inspirational reading.
As we prepared to leave, our waitress informed us that a person we had hardly noticed had paid the tab for each of us. We felt almost like an unrecognized Jesus had been with us.

At lunch time, the "Golden Glows" (older folks) of Plainfield Christian Church held their monthly meeting - a pitch-in meal (I took cake) followed by a great program. As usual, Peggy Hileman opened the meeting and was followed by Justin White, one of our ministry staff, who made remarks and delivered the opening prayer. Then, we dug in to a great meal. Ron Vance, from a church in Cincinnati and his twin brother, Jon, from a church in Fortville, IN, sat at my table.

The program, "Bible Sticks," was presented by Ron. It was absolutely fascinating. He passed around to the 75 or so attendees each of the beautiful "Bible Sticks" and chains he had carved over the years. Each carving takes about one year to complete. These carvings represented the following Subjects:
Twelve Apostles
Six Days of Creation
Ten Commandments
Armor of God
Fruit of the Spirit
Twelve Sons of Israel
Old Testament Chain
New Testament Chain
Ten Plagues of Egypt
Seven Churches of Asia
Humorous Teachings of Jesus
Christmas Stick
Final Week of Christ
Judges of Israel

Ron also passed around some of the crosses he had carved and pictures he had fashioned using pennies. A very good program. I purchased one of his books and returned home feeling blest.

I recommend that you visit his website: biblesticks.org

HELP WANTED

It appears that in the last general election there were no Republican candidates in 39 districts scattered across 15 states. These positions offer much more than just good pay. Some of these districts are listed below in State, District and general location sequence. Please help find a Republican candidate in these districts. Even if these districts can reasonably be considered “lost causes,” the effected taxpayers need to have a choice.

In recent ratings, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste considered 32 of the present officeholders (democrats) to be hostile, 6 unfriendly, and 1 lukewarm to taxpayers. The National Taxpayers Union granted a grade of “F” to 36 of this group while 3 of them rose to a “D”.

WHAT IF?

Surely you believe that the liberal dominated news media is very, very selective in what “news” they will print or report. Have you noticed the absence of reporting about the improved situation in Iraq? There are, of course, other examples but Linden will assume that you can think. WHAT IF, you complained to the lackluster “news” provider and, if satisfaction is not obtained you then call those who advertise in that medium? Your message could be something like: “ I am disappointed that you choose to advertise in or on …. Who will not report…. Perhaps this approach would pay dividends in the form of less biased news coverage.

CONTEST RESULTS & NEW FOCUS

Our title the photo contest, of Linden packed to move, sitting outside the nursing home, is now over. Judging was so difficult that it was decided to award two prizes. They go to Katia in Wisconsin and Sharon in Alabama. Because the photographer, Jack Burlison, is so sensitive and will accept no title less impressive than "Mona Lisa II," we will not share the winning titles with you. Or Jack.

Our new competition, for which there is no set completion date and certainly no prizes, also requires a little thought on your part. Simply send your thought about why you (or they) are a Republican or a Democrat. Send to: LWDcomment@aol.com include your first name and state of residence. An example of an entry is as follows: I am a Republican because only Republicans are handsome. Linden IN.
Submissions may be rejected because of unacceptable language or on a whim. A listing of submissions may be posted at a future date.

AN OLD DEMOCRAT

FAITH without works is dead. James 2-26

HOPE without definition is meaningless. L. SWIFT 2008
-----

AN OLD DEMOCRAT

Linden has always admired the speaking and writing abilities of Charles Krauthammer. It was his "Democrats invest in Iraq defeat" column which appeared in the February 25 issue of The Indianapolis Star that triggered this particular posting.

Linden has never been an adoring fan of Senator Joe Lieberman - he is just a shade (or two) to liberal for Linden's taste. Granted, that stance may be a requirement to get elected in the Northeast (and some other less than perfect areas) but, he is that shade too liberal. Linden will admit that he was elated when the new democrats effectively kicked him out of the party and Lieberman switched to Independent and won handily.

Krauthammer outlined several illustrations of the new democrat surrender at all costs leanings but his best lines in the column, in Linden's estimation, were those of Lieberman's quote, "Democrats have remained emotionally in a narrative of defeat and retreat in Iraq." Thank you Joe Lieberman. Thank you Charles Krauthammer.
Last thought: Are the democrats the party of Benedict Arnold?

EASY MONEY???

FAITH without works is dead. James 2:26

HOPE without definition is meaningless. L. Swift 2008
-----

EASY MONEY???

This is a complaint posting! So, if you do not enjoy analyzing complaints, go watch some mind numbing meaningless TV program.

Linden believes George Bush to be one of the better Presidents to serve within Linden's long life span. Further, depending on who writes the books,
he believes history will judge this rating to be accurate. That said, our President does not seem to recognize that the democrats control congress and that they are the party of the rich and spending is their forte, that advocating surrender is their entire foreign policy and, further, that lax immigration practices are widely resented,

Two cases in point: Linden's TV is not connected to a cable or satellite system. He, when he watches TV at all, utilizes rabbit ears. Now it seems that a change in the industry will require those of us with rabbit ears to acquire a converter if we do not want to go to a signal provider. Our "leaders" feel that it is the responsibility of the federal government (you taxpayers) to help pay part of the cost of these required converters. Please tell me where that obligation falls within the constitution. It would be both rude and painful for me to place my rabbit ears where they should go!

Secondly, Linden believes he is overtaxed. Now, instead of properly addressing taxation, these "leaders" intend to send large amounts of money to various ones in order to "stimulate the economy." We and those who follow us will pay the cost of the borrowing this necessitates. The economy needs stimulating precisely because these same "leaders" failed to require proper lending practices. When you make a bad financial decision, you should, and probably do, pay the cost. So should these lending organizations. It is enough to make me wish I had more rabbit ears and could cause them to be used as mentioned above.

LOCAL STUFF

Presidential candidate John MCain spoke to a large and receptive gathering in Indianapolis since my last posting. In that same vein, I suppose I should say that I understand that Ralph Nader has now announced a campaign for President.

I called my only remaining brother-in-law on his birthday: He was 96. Two of my sisters and I lived with him and an older sister when I was in the eighth grade. The land in central Illinois was really flat and I was used to the hills of southern Indiana. I missed my Dad a lot but was cared for very well.

"Why are you not running for a seat on the County Council?" This was a recent question for which I had no reasonable answer. So, just before the deadline on Friday, Linden went to the Government Center in Danville and filed for the office. He had served one term in this capacity some years ago and expects to enjoy the campaign (not planned or thought out at all) until the May 6 primary.

Following Church and Sunday School Linden was on his way to meet three couples at a restaurant for brunch. He was almost there when he discovered that he was wearing a coat that was not his. This is the kind of thing that could wreck a political campaign. He immediately returned to the proper coat rack and made the exchange. Hopefully before the owner of the jacket in question missed it. When Linden recounted the story after arriving, late, at the restaurant his friends were not overly sympathetic.

Although there was snow on the ground, Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous day - felt like Spring is on the way.

It is early - think I'll go take a short walk. Do good.

INDIANA

The primary purpose of this blog when it was founded last October was to call attention to those 39 Congressional Districts within 15 States where no Republican candidate was fielded in 2006. Linden has deviated from this primary purpose from time to time: Today is one of those times.

An unexpected and wonderful happening occurred in Indianapolis (Indiana's capital and largest city) last fall: An underfunded and not well known Republican Mayoral candidate, Greg Ballard, against long odds, defeated the incumbent Democrat for this office. It sent shock waves throughout the State and called attention to the taxpayer dissatisfaction with excessive real estate taxation.

Our Legislature is now in session and is attempting to address this taxing area that has become unmanageable. Some legislators are quaking in their boots as they consider the possible result of a continuing taxpayer revolt.

Our Governor, Mitch Daniels, has proposed what seems to be a reasonable problem solving approach. Now, it has been reported that one of the democrats has proposed what Linden would define as a goofy modification of the Governor's suggestion. Time is slipping away - nervousness is warranted. There is a time to feel and a time to think before acting. It is always thinking time when you are dealing with big spenders.

AN APOLOGY

I suppose that I owe an apology to many of those who inhabit the Northeastern states. For years, I have mentally compared their prevalent liberalism to a flock of bleating sheep being led to the slaughterhouse. With the mind poisoning teaching of the Ivy League type institutions of "higher learning" coupled with the pervasive liberalism of the area main stream media it is no wonder that many have been brainwashed. For just as long, Linden has considered that to be the least enlightened area of our country. I'M SORRY!

This week, with three consecutive postings addressing some of the shortcomings of the Berkeley area, Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman, perhaps I should reconsider where the least enlightenment exists. Surely when I consider and add the two California Senators to the mix my apology to the Northeastern states will become even more heartfelt.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

Hat Tip - Sharon Herbitter

"For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is making a comeback." Are the words attributed to Michelle Obama as she spoke in Wisconsin.
The word "ingrate" is what comes to Linden's mind as he considers the statement. His hope, in this regard, is that the Obama's never make it to the White House.

The congressional "investigation" of evil doings by baseball players may have been more worthwhile if the players had investigated Congress. California adds to its record of dumb choices as it continues to return the committee chair, Henry Waxman, to "serve". It has been said that the taxpayer cost per congressman is over one million dollars. WE WUZ ROBBED.

Approval ratings of this democrat controlled congress is consistently about ten points lower than that of President Bush. Linden believes that his record deserves a higher rating and that of congress is way too high.

Linden is certainly not rich and his income is not high. He expects his monthly tax bill to increase about $100.00 per month if this democrat controlled congress is successful in doing away with the Bush tax cuts. One has to wonder: Would our representation and news reporting be greatly improved if those who referred to these tax cuts as being only for the rich were lined up and shot?

TREASON?

TREASON?

Late last week Nancy Pelosi, feeling that a 12 day vacation was more important than protecting our country and its fighting forces, refused to allow a vote on a national security related bill. This bill had just passed in the Senate by a very wide margin.

Some say that her reluctance to hear the bill was probably fueled in part by her allegiance to the trial lawyers. Although I hope not, I expect some will die as a result of her decision. This decision not to vote on the bill brings some questions to mind.

I suppose the first question must be, "ARE WE AT WAR?"
If the answer is "YES," then one of the following questions in this instance is, "DOES CONSCIOUSLY AND PURPOSELY ACTING TO AID OUR ENEMIES" constitute a treasonable act? It would seem that the answer to these two questions is "YES!" Should Nancy Pelosi be so charged?

Now, for a little introspection. The party with the majority in the House enjoys the right of electing the Speaker: the democrats elected Nancy Pelosi to this position. If your vote helped to elect a democrat Congressman who voted for her, are you then to some degree guilty of an activity bordering on treason? Your conscience is yours.

HOW CAN THIS BE?

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
FAITH without works is dead. James 2:26
CHANGE unidentified may hold danger. L. Swift 2008
HOPE without definition is meaningless. L. Swift 2008
-----
If you rely on the main stream media to provide you with the "news", you may well be not even remotely aware of the subject of today's posting. Maybe you should call your "news" provider and ask for coverage.

It seems that the city government of Berkeley, CA, as a show of support and sympathy for a left wing bunch of sicko's called "Code Pink," decided to allow and even encourage the harassment of those assigned to a local U.S. Marine recruiting facility.

The ensuing situation, predictably deteriorated into a near riot condition. Apparently, some students were released from their classes for the purpose of being confrontational with the flag waving supporters of the Marines. American flags were burned, assaults occured and the police DID
NOTHING!

What is to be done when the left wing lunatic fringe of the democrat party behaves in a lawless manner? Further, how does one convince those present well meaning democrats that their party is no longer the party of fifty years ago? It has left them and their standards behind.

There have been mentions of some congressional efforts to withdraw federal funding from the city: Great idea! - Especially for their "educational" institutions - but the idea will go nowhere because the democrat leadership will not allow it to advance.

Unfortunately, the only ideas Linden has been able to advance to date are impractical. One would be to bring in the National Guard to assume all law enforcement duties. This, of course, would result in there being no further need for the current police department. Another would be to bring in sharia law. After a few "activists" are stoned to death and a few throats are cut, it just could instill a new appreciation for our detested freedoms.

TOM WOODS

Only occasionally does one encounter a person who is absolutely well regarded in every aspect and by all: Family, friends and acquaintances. Such a man was Colonel Thomas Richard Woods.

Funeral services for Tom were held at Plainfield Christian Church, Plainfield, Indiana on February 14, 2008.

Piano and vocal music was provided by Bob Boswell, Todd and Lyn Dillon sang a duet and the congregation joined in singing two numbers. Tom's son, Terry, provided memories and Senior Minister Steve White delivered the funeral sermon, which was based on the 23rd Psalm. The service closed with bagpipe music being played by Joe Brink.

It was a great recognition of a truly good man and I can think of nothing more comforting than to know that The Good Shepherd will provide for those who believe.

INVESTING

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
Most of Linden's friends are far too considerate to ever mention something like accumulation of wealth to him. They are familiar with his lack of ability in this area. Recently, one did make such an unfeeling comment in regard to another person who had met with some success. Apparently she is not aware of Linden's lack of money handling ability. His main concern is whether or not his children will be able to borrow the funds necessary to provide for his funeral. The comment regarding this other, more successful, person arrived just moments after Linden had inspected a recent holdings report which included reference to six old investments which now have a total value of $1.26.
Included in this report was reference to an investment Linden made in a sub-prime mortgage lending organization. It is now valued at about one third of what it was valued at only ten months ago. Should not the U.S. Government (you taxpayers) reimburse Linden for his careless, if not stupid, approach to investing? I am almost sorry I asked: They are liable to do it.
The correct answer to the question is NO! They should not force the taxpayers to rescue those like me, or organizations not following sound business principles, or any involved in any way with poor judgement in regard to the sub-prime lending caused financial mess. Individuals and organizations should be solely responsible for their own bad decisions.

It is probable that our spend happy Congress and President will make the wrong decision and you will pay. THANK YOU, in advance, for bailing me out.

RACIAL BIGOTRY?

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
Faulty memory is only one of the problems one sometimes associates with growing older. Linden can not remember whether he read or heard a comment regarding the democrat primaries of February 12. The gist of the comment was that Obama was an overwhelming favorite to sweep the races in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The reason given for this prediction was that they all have a large percentage of black population. The comment appeared to attract little, if any, media notice.
I note that Obama has been the winner in many states which have a population that is even more overwhelmingly white. I wonder what the reaction would have been if it had been predicted that Clinton would win these states because of their white majority. The person making the comment seemed to infer a condition of black racial bigotry. I hope this is not true.
Linden does not really care what the correct answer is to this question: He can not imagine being willing to bet his future, and the future of his country, on either Clinton or Obama.

GRASSROOTS

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in our January 28 posting.
-----
It has been said that all politics originates at the local level: Linden believes this to be true and that is the primary subject of today's posting. There had been a very heavy snowfall predicted for our area last night so I was not certain that I would attempt to attend our Hendricks County, Indiana Republican Roundtable early this morning.
The snowfall was not nearly to the predicted extent so, although I do not enjoy driving on dark snowy and slick roads as much as I once did, I made it with no problems. Certainly nothing like Fred Palmer telling me, while I was enjoying my first cup of coffee, about a deer near the roadway making him a bit nervous.
State Representqtives Greg Steuerwald and Jeff Thompson were the speakers at today's meeting. Property tax issues are the primary focal points in the current legislative session and they covered the efforts that are ongoing to address this knotty issue. Jeff has served for several terms but this is the baptism of fire for Greg and he will do well: He did tell a funny story about sitting in the wrong place at his first caucus meeting.
Indiana is almost at the point of open revolt over excessive taxing of real estate. One of the things we can be thankful for is that all amendments to any bill is that the amendment must be germane to the bill to which it is attached. It would be good if such a restraint was in place at the federal level.
Pete Miller, our very competent Republican County Chairman, and I were the last two to leave the meeting and he did me the favor of clearing the ice which had formed on my car windows while we were meeting. What a nice guy! What a good meeting. What a great Party!!!

EXPECTATIONS

Before starting with todays subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
It would be fair to say that, generally speaking, Linden maintains a rather low opinion of the majority of those "serving" in the U.S. Congress. This would be especially true of the period dominated by the Pelosi/Reid comedy team. Thank God for those few who appear to be there to actually serve.
Linden expected the ongoing effort to surrender in Iraq.
Linden expected money to be thrown at the taxpayers in this election season.
Linden expected much worthless talk about the rule of law.
Linden expected footdragging in regard to appoinment confirmations.
Linden expected failure in regard to addressing the illegal immigrant problem.

What Linden did not expect was to become more aware of a problem that exists within the immigration area that is not associated with illegals. Namely, the lackluster effort to naturalize many of those who are here legally and are trying to fulfill every requirement.
Linden does not personally know a large number of those in this category; but, he does know of more than one who have been "jumping through the hoops" for more than ten years with still no idea of when they will be granted citizenship. It would seem that no more than six years should be required to meet all document shuffling requirements.

Another area which warrants action is the treatmen of foreign born spouses if they were married to a U.S. citizen in a foreign country. They are not allowed to join their spouse in this country within a reasonable time.
With all the favored treatment that is and has been considered for illegal immigrants, the treatment of legal immigrants could well be defined as unconscionable discrimination.

Feel free to share this concern with your Congressman or other official

RECOVERY (ALMOST)

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----

Now, some 24 hours older and much wiser, Linden returns to his normal condition after posting "DESPAIR" yesterday. Linden had no control over this passage of time and most of the improvement in his mental condition came from outside sources. Men's Prayer Breakfast (scrambled eggs and pork chops) early this morning provided, through the study of Moses in Exodus chapter 2, an appreciation for "in God's time."
One reader said "be of good cheer" and provided a convincing argument for doing just that. Another, who came to our shores some years ago, said "America is a great country." How can you argue with that?
I, of couse, have devoted some thought to the candidate selection problems the democrats are in the process of developing. Sharon Herbitter's posting "The Last Thing I Should Be Doing" at http://sherbitter.livejournal.com/ expanded on my thoughts. What a great writer she is!
Michelle Malkin's "Quo vadis, conservatives" at www.townhall.com/columnists/ outlines the path the Republican conservatives should now follow: Linden, as an evangelical Christian Republican conservative was much impressed with her thoughts.
Some months ago both parties were presented with a list of 8 or 9 candidates for the highest office in our land. Each of the remaining candidates were at or near the bottom of Linden's preference listing at that time. This fact does not change the responsibility each of us has to attempt to select the best leader for our country.
Never forget, we are engaged in a long term war which must be won. Some among our enemies would enjoy killing you.

WORRISOME WEDNESDAY

Before starting with todays subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
Linden's "Super Tuesday" titled posting only accounted for the first few hours of Tuesday. The day got markedly worse as he found himself watching network news for the election results. Not enjoying being brainwashed, Linden does not ever happily watch network news.
Linden found those reports and those which followed worrisome. He can identify only one of the present candidates with whom he would feel half way secure if this person became President. That man is Romney.
When our country is attacked again who would not surrender? Romney and McCain. Do you know what surrender would do to your life?
If the media is successful in selling their idea that we are in a recession, who would best address the problem? Romney.
Who is most likely to adequately address the flouting of our immigration laws? Romney.
Who is most likely to present a workable health care proposal? Romney.
Ask yourself the same type question in regard to the potential problems we, as a country, may face. Please think! This may be a new experience for you but try it. The future of our country may depend upon your ability to do so. Is Linden worried? You bet!
Lastly, I recommend inquiring on "theo caldwell national post canada" and clicking on "Democrat or Republican?"

SUPER TUESDAY

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest which was announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
Linden is pleased to say that it is indeed a super Tuesday. First, it was one of those rare nights when he did not sit up in bed, wide awake, long before time to arise. Super! When he did awaken, it was long enough before his regular Tuesday morning coffee meeting that he had no need to hurry. Linden hates to hurry.
The coffee meeting, as usual, went well. There was much more discussion of the Super Bowl than there was of political matters - although there were a few references to the undesirability of some of the candidates. Since there is much that is so unsettled, it is just as well to not thoroughly discuss this subject at this time.
Coffee was followed by having biscuits and gravy, alone, at Chick-fil-A, more coffee and a little paper reading. Went by the post office and received no bills. Super! Back home, finished reading the paper and completed the Sudoku puzzle just in time to fall sound asleep in my recliner. Super! Old men need naps.
Now, at a little after noon on this super Tuesday, I look ahead to a Worrisome Wednesday, Troubling Thursday and Frantic Friday. Do good.

Gary Varvel of the Indianapolis Star is my favorite political cartoonist. In his most recent caption contest he chose my caption for his cartoon. I am pleased. garyvarvel.com should take you to his area of the Star.

Linden is fortunate to have a lovely friend who is employed by an elder care facility: She seems to share Linden's political inclination and after a discussion with a patient she told me: "I have a real impact on his life, giving him medication, calling him for breakfast, buying him marshmallows: Hillary is just promises." Makes sense to me.

Ever wonder why Republicans are considered by many to be " the party of the rich" ?

I just purchased a really nice English as a Second Language instructional folio - now, to get it to Austria.

My attempts to produce my first CD hit a snag. Further announcements to come.

Yesterday included morning church, Sunday School, and evening church. At Sunday School they passed our a sheet containing 21 Old Testament references to prophesies concerning the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

During the Presidential selection process, I often see a picture of a candidate (almost always democrat) speaking in a church (almost always a Black church.) Am I wrong in considering this to be defilement of the temple?

Some of these districts are listed below in State, District and general location sequence. Please help find a Republican candidate in these districts.

Alabama 5 Huntsville – One Found?
Alabama 7 Birmingham

Florida 23 Fort Lauderdale – One Found?

MEN'S PRAYER BREAKFAST

Before starting with today's subject matter, I would like to call your attention to our "title the photo" contest announced in the January 28 posting.
-----
There was supposed to be a very heavy snow here last night and I'm happy to report that it has not yet arrived. I decided last night that I would walk the short distance to Church for our MPB this morning and that I would wear the new boots Julie purchased for me. I found my flashlight, wore heavy socks and, long before daylight, was in the company of probably 75 Christian men.
The absolutely best in the world biscuits and gravy is that which is prepared by the cooks for the Men's Prayer Breakfast at The Plainfield, IN Christian Church. I ate a bunch and brought some home for later in the day. We mentioned many different persons and issues in our prayers and ended with a study of Exodus. What a wonderful way to start the day!
You are not going to believe this but Linden is not the best editor in the world (Sharon Herbitter is). Even though he is not the best, he is thoroughly enjlying editing the women in ministry writings of a friend he first met in Austria last year. What impresses Linden most is that with little formal exposure to the English language, she writes quite well. God has blessed me with our friendship.

LINDEN’S BOOKS

“MIND OVER FATTER” written in 1983 as a contrast to a Jane Fonda book. She had a better publisher so sales languished. It, written in calligraphy, was the first to present the concept of vicarious exercise. “An approach to weight control and physical conditioning which provides solace for the sedentary – includes recipes and statistical political commentary.”
