LINDEN’S LIFE
Met with Bill, Chuck, and Jack for another of our enjoyable Thursday breakfast meetings. Much like yesterday, no real accomplishments were made. I have practically stopped work on what may be my next book. It got warm enough that it is not so slick walking to my car.

LINDEN’S LIFE
Went to two groceries, a gas station, the post office and back home. There, I spent hours trying to sort out my VCR and DVD collection: my VCR player is not working properly and I’m attempting to salvage the things I would like to see again.

PHILIPPIANS

PHILIPPIANS
Although written by Paul from prison, possibly in Rome in about A.D. 62, this letter often mentions the words, “joy” and “rejoice”. What words in a greeting could surpass, “I thank my God every time I remember you”?

Overall, the letter is one of thanks, praise, belief and love to those in the church at Philippi, which Paul had founded about ten years earlier.

Tuesday was a very quiet, non-productive day broken in the middle by having a pizza lunch with Bill and Heather Wash and their four kids. I’m going to miss them when they move out of the Mission House.

LINDEN'S CHRISTMAS WEEKEND

LINDEN’S CHRISTMAS WEEKEND
As we are entering the last five days of 2010, I will depart from my usually politically oriented blog format. It is possible that I will link to a writing that I find compelling.

My Friday: I went to a gas station, the credit union, post office and by church. In addition to the normal Christmas cards, received wishes from Austria, Belarus. Kosova, and Ukraine. In the evening, Julie, Kenneth, and Jade took me out to eat and then back at my place for a while, then on to church for the great candlelight communion program. Sometime during the day I talked to Brian. It was a good day.

My Saturday: First thing, I opened the presents Brian sent…a book that I wanted regarding the 100 year history of an Italian family, a large book of SUDOKU puzzles, and some snacks. Then I called long term friend Betty Henry who lives in Florida. Brian called and I talked to him, Sheri, Alison, and Scott. Julie, Kenneth, and Jade came by for a few hours in the evening. They brought a great CD that I had asked for, a DVD set of the Fawlty Towers comedy series, and, as usual, many snacks. I played with Jade a great deal and had just a wonderful Christmas day.

My Sunday: For Sunday school, John Lee started teaching the book of Joshua. In church, the music was good and Steve White preached regarding Simeon recognizing Jesus Christ as the Messiah. At the conclusion of services, Igor Wash was baptized. I talked to David Mills for a while then went down front to talk to Igor.
Julie called after I returned home and she was getting ready to start toward her home. She had taken off her earrings last night and wondered if she had left them here…as I searched, she found them. She called about 7:00 to say that they had arrived home and that it had snowed about five inches in the Chicago area. I watched the Colts win a televised game. It was a great weekend. I am blest!

AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT
On Wednesday the Obama family went on vacation (again) and the lame duck session of Congress mercifully adjourned. Many of them will never “serve” in Congress again. Quite a gift!!!

LINDEN'S LIFE
Met Bill, Chuck, Jack, and Paul for breakfast…I had biscuits and gravy. Jack delivered some very good cookies that Julie Spires sent me. Sandi cleaned my living quarters while I was at breakfast and was gone by the time I returned home. I only left the house for about ten minutes in the afternoon and that is when Brian called and left me a message. I hate to miss calls from my kids.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

BENEDICT ARNOLD LIVES ON?

BENEDICT ARNOLD LIVES ON?
Rightly or wrongly, Benedict Arnold is considered by many to be the picture of a treasonous person. If the START treaty is as bad for the U.S. as Linden fears, should not those Republicans who voted to approve it be considered to be of the Arnold ilk?

Experience has taught us that all of the democrats would support the treaty as would the two “independents”. But thirteen from the GOP is just unthinkable. Of those, Linden believes that Bennett, Gregg, and Voinovich will not be “serving” in 2011. He also thinks that Alexander, Cochran, Collins, Isakson, Johans, and Murkowski will not face the voters in 2012.

However, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Richard Lugar of Indiana, and Olympia Snowe of Maine should face the voters in 2012: Linden fully expects to contribute to any primary opponent they may have and hopes to live long enough to oppose the other six when next they run.

EPHESIANS
This short letter to the Ephesians and those in the surrounding territory was written by Paul in about A D 60 while he was in prison in Rome.

The central theme of this letter to the Gentiles seems to be that we all (Jews and Gentiles) should consider ourselves to be members of one church that is headed by Jesus Christ.

ANOTHER DAY CLOSER
Monday marked another day of little reported Congressional political activity and brings us one day closer to the end of what we may correctly call the nightmare of the 111th Congress. By there being little reported activity, please don’t think for a minute that continuing damage to our country is not being plotted. Continue praying.

Other than a couple of small trips, was laboring over a mountain of paperwork most of the day until Lisa showed up. She and I joined Bill and Rhonda in a trip to Mooresville to eat at Grays. As usual, a great meal. After we got back to my place, Lisa didn’t stay long as it was snowing like crazy and she had a long drive to Carmel.

PERSONAL BIAS
Linden does not hesitate to say that he is/was biased against practically everything that was put forward in this lame duck Congressional session. Unfortunately for America, this session, as was the last four years, was controlled by the democrats.

Perhaps two years from now we will see another cleansing of Congress (and the White House) such as the cleansing we saw in this past November. Hope so. It being the time of peace on earth, Linden will not now list the names of those most responsible for providing major disappointments.

LINDEN'S LIFE
Friday: pitch-in at our early morning Men’s Prayer Breakfast. I took Chris, our church intern for pizza at noon. Later, Lisa arrived in from Maine…she is Rubye’s daughter. We had a really great visit for a couple of hours. In the evening, joined about 15 other people for a celebration of the season party at Chuck and Mary Ann’s. I just had a wonderful day.

Saturday: Men’s meeting at 7:30 at Kingsway church and a writers group meeting at 10:00 at the home of Steve and Joyce. Nice events. Watched on TV as Butler won a basketball game.

Sunday: Church, Sunday school, and watched the Colts win a game. Wendy spoke at Sunday school about her past year in Africa and Bill and Heather spoke of their efforts to go there.

AN ISSUES SURVEY RESPONSE
A couple of days ago Linden received an issues survey from a Republican organization…they may not have received my response regarding my concern generated list of suggestions because they asked for a donation and Linden, of course, selects individual candidates to support. The following is the list that they may have received:

Defund NPR.
Defund ethanol subsidies.
Sell the Nancy Pelosi plane.
Prosecute those involved in voter fraud.
Consolidate government agencies.
Make lame duck sessions illegal.

LINDEN IS CONCERNED
After almost four years of this anti American democrat congress we are soon to see the change for the better that 2011 will, almost undoubtedly bring. In these last days of the complete domination by the democrats the changes they are trying to effect are really scary, if you care about our country.

“Don’t ask, Don’t tell” overthrow, the Start treaty, amnesty for illegals, and perhaps worst of all the Omnibus Appropriations Bill of 1924 largely unread pages, containing, it is said, over 6,000 earmarks amounting to around eight thousand million dollars, is enough to give any thinking person pause. GOD help us!

Met Jan at Panera Bread for a bagel at 11:00. Later, went to the post office, by the Pier 14 office, took a piece of mail to Bill Wash at the Mission House and returned home. In the evening, Barb, Wyatt Wash’s grandmother, brought me some cookies she and Wyatt prepared. He is about five or six years old. He suggested bringing them to me saying, “you know, he is eighty years old and can still walk.”
My computer did not really want to bring you this posting: irritatingly balky!

GALATIANS
Paul considered his first trip to the Galatians to be very successful in regard to his effort to bring them to Christ. This trip occurred in about 45 A D. He returned to the area in about 50 and 54 A D.

This letter, written in about 57 A D, was necessitated because of reports that Judaizers were having some success in their effort to convince the Galatians that being obedient to the early law, most especially that of circumcision, was a necessary part of their Christian walk. Paul refuted those claims.

SUPREME COURT JUSTICES
Earlier in these postings, Linden expressed his opposition to Elena Kagan being confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. Her first vote to favor a lawbreaker illustrates the why of this opposition. Sonia Sotomayor was one of three others who joined with Kagan in their losing effort. Sotomayor was also opposed by Linden. Of course the democrats were practically unanimous in their support of these two extreme liberals.

Sadly, five Republicans voted to confirm Kagan: Susan Collins, Lindsay Graham, Judd Gregg, Richard Lugar, and Olympia Snowe. It is particularly hurtful that Lugar represents Indiana. The “thinking” is that the President deserves great deference in regard to his appointments to the Court. Nothing could be further from the truth. They should votes for the best interest of constitutional law.

Linden believes that all “serving” democrats should be replaced by the voters and further believes that a list of undeserving Republicans should start to be prepared. Lugar will almost certainly be opposed in the next primary.

CONGRESS PLEASE RAISE MY TAXES
Of course Linden, being sometimes rational, would much prefer that his taxes not be raised. However, if the choice were worded as, “would you rather that Obama and the democrats do away with the Bush tax cuts and thereby raise the cost of government to you or would you rather that you, your children, your grandchildren, and their children be saddled with unconscionable debt as a result of the fecklessness of the democrats adding non-germane items to the proposal to extend the Bush tax cuts? Would not any caring current taxpayer prefer that their own taxes be raised?

Saturday: Had a really enjoyable lunch with Diana, the former owner of my favorite bookstore. She brought me a box of really good candy.

Sunday: Church, Sunday School, and brunch with friends. Barbara Furman gave me some home-made fudge. Loved it! Heard that Margaret Robbins, the wife of Warren, our pastor of some years ago, had passed away. Nice lady. I saw her for a few minutes about a month ago. The Christmas program at church in the evening was absolutely fabulous. Sure glad I went through the snow.

SOME CONGRESSIONAL PROGRESS?
One should never feel secure until after this lame duck Congressional session is over but it does appear that the Republicans were able to stop the democrat effort to further our debt crisis by sending all Social Security recipients a check for $250.00. We can hope this is true and also that some other hopeful signs will come to fruition.

Linden has read that the cost of sending this Social Security check would result in total spending of borrowed money of fourteen billion dollars. Is that really fourteen thousand million dollars?

I was home the rest of the day and like to think that I was productive in some areas. Probably a wrongful thought. I watched the first half of the Colts game but, since I had to get up early, did not stay up for the entire game.

BAD LEGISLATION
Those who follow activities (or the lack thereof) of the legislative process, as Linden does, well know that the Obama healthcare bill was something over two thousand pages of hacked together freedom curtailment unread trash. Perhaps expecting a democrat led Congress to do a better job is just expecting too much.

Now we find that over two hundred waivers have been granted to those organizations who find that compliance with this monstrosity is just too difficult to do right now. Should not every taxpayer be granted a waiver? Or, to ask a better question, should not this shoddy effort be immediately relegated to the trash heap of history?

Bill Wash invited me to come over to the Mission House to have a pancake breakfast with him and the kids. So, of course, I went! The Pancakes were good and so was our visit. He even gave me some Facebook usage advice (hope I can remember until tomorrow) and put a picture of me on my profile page.

Later, I went to the credit union, post office and by church for a minute. Had dinner and attended the program at church in the evening.

II CORINTHIANS
This letter by Paul to the church in Corinth was written only a short time after the first letter. It was written after he received information that the results of the first “severe” letter had been generally good.

So, the first part of this second letter was used to express Paul’s pleasure with the change in the Corinthian church and the second part was used to defend himself against those who were against him.

LINDEN'S LIFE
It seems to have been a very busy day although the accomplishments were few. Was on the phone a great deal, including twice with Brian and, of course, spent considerable time on the computer.
In the evening had dinner at Don and Donna’s along with Jack and Helen, Carl and Shirley, Ron and Mary Ann, and Bob and Jo Ann. Had, as always, a really pleasant time.
When I got home at 10:00, Kent had called and wanted me to return the call…since I rarely drive after dark, he was worried that I didn’t answer his first call. He even came by my place to check on me before I got home. I am so blessed with the friends I have.

TWO WEEKS UNTIL WINTER
Yep, Linden was surprised when, after hearing that the current temperature was eight degrees above zero and starting his car to let it warm up, he glanced at the calendar and noticed that two weeks from today marks the start of winter. So, I guess we should all try to enjoy the last two weeks of fall.

It is a shame that many of the reported twenty thousand global warming nuts are probably enjoying the rather balmy temperatures in Cancun, after burning thousands of gallons of jet fuel to get there, and they are totally missing these invigorating days. I guess the rest of us are lucky that there are some that care so deeply about carbon credits or whatever. Aaargh!

LINDEN'S LIFE
After taking care of the necessary errands for the day, it was nothing but enjoyable to have a long lunch period with Thuc Phan and Bob Hughes…Thuc drove out from Indianapolis and Bob from Carmel. The three of us had worked together almost fifteen years ago. We teased Thuc a lot because it is fun and because he was a few minutes late. Bob reminded me of a time when, while we were visiting Indiana prisons, we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in Corydon, Indiana. We came down for breakfast and there was a pair of newlyweds, a couple celebrating their anniversary, and another couple already seated. They eyed us rather strangely and it wasn’t long before they were aware that we occupied separate rooms. If I can remember, next Monday when I post a link to a country song, I may use “My Old Pal” or “In The Jailhouse Now” in honor of this luncheon.

We didn’t have electricity at the farm where I lived as an eleven year old seventh grader sixty nine years ago when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. So, I wasn’t aware of it until I had walked over the hills to school. The thought then was that there would be a war which the U.S. would quickly win. We had absolutely no idea how poorly equipped we were at that time for war!

There is a lesson that should be learned…we live in a dangerous world and wars can be won or lost much more quickly now than was possible then. If we should ever lose, where would one go to find safety?

It was late Monday evening when I received the sad news that my brother-in-law, Raymond Smith, had passed away in Sullivan, IL. I believe he was 99 years old, a really good man. I lived with him and my sister, Alva, when I was in the eighth grade.

INDIANA WESLEYAN U. VOLLEYBALL
There being little going on recently in the political area that was of great interest to Linden, it was a real blessing that Kelsey Masuda had mentioned at our Thanksgiving feast that the University team would be playing in the league championship tournament in Florida this past week.

Kelsey is the granddaughter of my long time friends Sam and Shirley Friedman and Sam gave me directions as to how I could pick up the final games on my computer. I simply couldn’t get the computer to cooperate and missed the semifinal game but, again with Sam’s direction, was able to view the three championship games.

I had never watched a televised volleyball game before but, of course, found these games to be really interesting. Kelsey and her teammates played extremely well and won the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) championship by winning three straight games in this best of five series. I saw no mention of this in The Indianapolis Star on Sunday.

My thanks to Sam and my congratulations to Kelsey and her team.

Friday: attended the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at 6:00 and, later, went to the post office, car repair shop, a gas station and by the Chamber of Commerce.

Saturday: drove through our first real snowfall to go to the men’s breakfast meeting at Kingsway church. While I was there, three different guys gave me some money toward a benevolence related activity. Bless them! The volleyball game was the main focus in the afternoon. I parked the car in the barn because the snow was getting deep.

Sunday: attended church and Sunday school sessions then went to brunch with friends. Later in the afternoon, watched the Colts lose in an overtime game.

APPEARANCES
It appears to Linden, in these last days of the democrat majority in the House and the bullet proof democrat majority in the Senate, that Reid and Pelosi are still dawdling around instead of doing meaningful legislative work.

Apparently the Republicans in the Senate will make it more difficult for the party of evil to pass some of those items they, and no thinking person, care deeply about. Their time is, thankfully, running out.

It now appears that if the democrats do not focus on passing an extension of the Bush tax cuts rather quickly, the withholding systems will assume that these cuts will expire and what amounts to an Obama tax increase will be assumed. This would cause many people to see a much larger chunk withheld from their paycheck in early January. Maybe that would not be all bad as it would cause many of the slow thinkers to realize that the Bush tax cuts did not affect only the rich.

MAYBE SOMETHING GOOD, SOMETHING BAD
In these last daze of the democrat controlled House, some good things have been hinted at or expressed and of course some bad.

Linden thinks these may be some of the good: Rep. elect Todd Rokita saying that he will sleep in his office and return to Indiana weekly. Senate Republicans saying that they will filibuster any bills that take precedence over extending the Bush tax cuts and ensuring government funding through the new year. Possible end of ethanol subsidies. Possible ending earmarks in the House.

And he thinks these may be some of the bad: 56 Senators support continuing earmarks. Any support for the “food safety bill”. Senate approval of an Obama tax increase by not supporting extension of the Bush tax cuts. Dream Act immigrant amnesty. The Pigford settlement.

It is close to time to start identifying those we wish to see defeated in 2012.

In the evening had dinner and attended the program at church, listened to the last part of the I.U. basketball loss and watched the Butler Basketball win.
