ABORTION IN NEW YORK

I believe it was this past Friday when Linden heard on the Rush Limbaugh radio show a reference to a British piece speaking of this subject. Probably the same article that he was referring to was found and is one of the two informational links below.

It seems that the ad that is mentioned sparked some unfavorable reaction in New York, including a possible protest by the race hustler Al Sharpton. The question should be, “does the ad depict reality?”

LINDEN’S LIFE

Friday: Walked thru the snow, got the car out of the barn and drove to Men’s Prayer Breakfast. Later, Ray ran the snow plow down the lane to my place and cleaned off the parking area also. Received a nice note from Kevin and Dimi at Haus Edelweiss…she is starting her eighth month of pregnancy…truly a gift from God.

Saturday: Watched Butler win a basketball game. In the evening, Donna picked me up and we went to the Chamber of Commerce dinner and fund raising auction. Had a really good dinner and an enjoyable evening although I didn’t bid on anything.

Sunday: Morning church and Sunday school followed by paper reading, a nap, food, watching part of an Indiana U. basketball game and evening church.

HOPE FOR TAXPAYERS

The resurgence of Republican political power that largely went into effect in January of 2011 has resulted in those who think even remotely like Linden having a sense of renewed hope.

At the federal level, it appears that earmarks are no longer with us and there is a concentrated effort to cut back or stop some of the spending excesses of the recent past. Hopefully some financial recovery actions will be taken. In many of the states, including Indiana, action is being taken to reduce spending. Many of these actions are being vigorously opposed by the remaining democrats.

IS IT THEFT?

Since some think that Linden is somewhat opinionated, you write for yourself this commentary: If one is presented as wanting to serve in a legislative position, is it not expected that they will serve according to the rules of the body. If physically able, will they not be present at quorums? No thinking person expects universal agreement on the matters brought before these legislative bodies. Yet, the personal responsibility for being present to vote is always there. Thus, the question, are the actions of legislators in Indiana and Wisconsin anything other than theft of the benefits they accept? Now, for a bit of Linden’s opinion: not a single one of these missing legislators should ever hold office again. They should repay both wages and benefits. They should be ostracized by their associates.

Started the wide awake portion of my day with biscuits and gravy at Chick-fil-A. Went from there to a store, the credit union, the post office, and dropped off some papers for recycling. Back at home the high point was Dan and Diana dropping by with some pie for me. I am blest. Good dinner and program at church in the evening. Heard from both Brian and Julie.

HEBREWS

There is some uncertainty regarding the authorship of Hebrews but it is widely believed to have been authored by Paul, probably from Rome and prior to A.D. 70.

The primary purpose of the writing appears to be an attempt to strengthen the faith of the Christians who may be tempted to return to Judaism. Perhaps, secondarily, it was to prepare them for the coming destruction of Jerusalem.

PARENTS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN

The striking school teachers in Wisconsin are having an effect on a group Linden had not previously considered: the parents of those children who are not being served.

Thanks to a comment by Rush Limbaugh, Linden became aware of those parents who must, in order to take care of their own jobs, find and alternate means of looking after their children. Parenting is tough enough without suffering from an unexpected source.

PROTESTING FACTS

Linden believes that the fact is some of the wasteful spending as practiced by government entities at practically all levels is not sustainable. Particularly in a time of deepening financial depression for many taxpayers, the time is just wrong for workers employed by the taxpayers to demand continuing favorable treatment.

It would seem that the protest in Wisconsin is doomed to failure despite the support of the organizer-in-chief. The effort to curtail some of the employee expense in Wisconsin is only the first of what Linden believes will be a cascading effort throughout the public employee sectors. Then, it will start addressing some of the major drains on the federal budget.

The links below bring you thought supplied by deeper thinkers than Linden. The music link may bring tears.

MORE OBAMA VS. BUSH

As a follow-up to the great posting yesterday, Linden decided to present some additional thoughts today. One would be that the seven years of Bush budget deficits equal little more that a one year Obama budget deficit.

Linden lodged this Internet inquiry, “comments in 2004 regarding Bush budget deficits.” He found the comments included in reference to one article to be particularly interesting. He, again, was taken with the video clip showing Obama attempting to speak without reading what was on a teleprompter. GEORGE BUSH, BIG SPENDER

GEORGE BUSH, BIG SPENDER

Linden agreed with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama back in those years before Obama became President when we all charged President Bush with being a big spender. We were correct!

In defense of President Bush, we should note that the deficits were in a downward trend until the democrats regained control of both legislative branches. Remember, the House controls formation of the budget document although the President submits his desired budget.

Our condemnation of President Bush was justified because the average budget deficit in the last seven years of his tenure was two hundred and ninety nine billion dollars. That is a lot of money!

Unfortunately for all of us, our children, our grandchildren and their grandchildren, the spending under President Obama makes George Bush look like a skinflint. It appears that the budget deficit under President Obama will average more that ONE TRILLION dollars MORE that the average deficit under President Bush. Can you even imagine how much a trillion is?

$1 X 1,000 = $1,000.00 X 1,000 = 1 million dollars X 1,000 = one billion dollars X 1,000 = one trillion dollars. The Obama budget calls for spending close to two trillion dollars more than the amount of dollars received…and we hear the libs whine about the Republicans wanting to fairly modestly cut this budget!

PHILEMON

Written by Paul while in a Roman prison in about A.D. 60, the major focus of this very short letter is Onesimus, the runaway slave of Philemon.

Onesimus became a Christian after arriving in Rome where be was a close associate of Paul. Paul is sending him back to Philemon along with this letter which essentially asks for mercy and a display of Christian love for Onesimus. Philemon was a leader of the church in Colosse.

OBAMA’S BUDGET

Based upon early coverage, Linden has to believe that this “budget” is just a very bad joke. It was reported that it contains fifteen tax increases yet provides for yet another multi-billion dollar deficit spending plan. Sadly, it talks about perhaps being of some value in ten years. By then, hopefully, Obama will be out of office for eight years.

The Republicans certainly have their work cut out for them and will get little cooperation from the Senate or the White house. The time for cuts is now.

In the two hundred and twenty some years of the history of our nation, have we ever been so poorly led? Surely this is not the hope and change so many professed to want.

DANIELS IN D.C.

Linden just didn’t hear any political news that tickled his fancy for most of the weekend. Luckily, while at the Republican meeting he attended on Saturday, the presentation by Mitch Daniels at CPAC was mentioned as being worth seeing or reading. It was and it is.

Linden still has stars in his eyes over the help Sarah Palin provided the McCain candidacy and her Tea Party efforts so, he has not paid attention to other potential Presidential candidates. Until Saturday.

The first link below takes you to a video of the Daniels speech: if you would prefer to read it, you can easily find it. It is quite long. The second link is to an article about light bulbs and then, there is, of course, a music link.

APPROVING CRIMINALITY

What can you expect from a news source that frequently exposes the editorial page readers to the tripe most often produced by the likes of E. J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson? Answer: not much!

In the “Our Opinion” portion of the February 10 Indianapolis Star appeared “Let’s keep out the welcome mat” as it spoke regarding a legislative effort to curtail the flood of illegal aliens or, as they were called, “undocumented immigrants.” The piece referred to support for their position by several other well known persons and/or organizations.

Some of those most dear to Linden are legal immigrants…so, it is fair to say that what he is most concerned with is the illegality of those who flout our laws. The fact that we have and have had those in positions of power who turned their face from criminal acts is no reason for any State to not step forward in their stead. To do otherwise is an insult to those who jumped through the hoops to become legal residents.

SMALL BUDGET CUTTING STEPS

Maybe they are not really all that small but Linden is impatient. A cut that is now out of committee is to cut a total of 32 billion dollars from a number of departments. Actually that is a pretty large figure, but Linden wants more.

Also, a vote is expected next week to defund Obamacare…now that could be a really large one! It will be interesting to see if and how that effort moves forward.

This short letter was written by Paul in about A.D. 65 to one of those who had supported him in several different capacities and for a number of years.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Linden would consider himself to be slightly addled if he thought of himself as being Irish-German-English-American. No, he is just an American who happens to be white, or Caucasian if you prefer.

In the same vein, he does not really understand the desirability of some of those who are black, or Negroid if you prefer, to refer to themselves as “African-American” although they and their near ancestry is American. Linden believes he has known three real African-Americans in his long life and two of them were white.

NOT THE NEWS LINDEN WANTS

Granted, it is too much to expect that legislative efforts to turn back the excesses of the last four years of a democrat controlled congress be accomplished in the first month of Republican rule in the House…but it is something to hope for.

Big Government displayed three items Sunday that do provide some hope for future legislative efforts: Senators calling for cuts in spending; investigation of Obamacare waivers; and bills to short circuit the EPA effort to implement Cap and Trade. Also, Friday brought a report that unemployment had a significant decrease: Linden does not believe that for a moment nor does he have a great deal of faith in the endless polls that substitute for news reporting.

Maybe when the Super Bowl hype winds down and somebody (anybody) presents believable analysis of the situation in Egypt we will start seeing more meaningful action in Washington, D.C.

LINDEN’S LIFE

Friday: Didn’t get through the snow and ice to Men’s Prayer Breakfast. Got a call from Sharon, in Florida, saying that my good friend, Bob Shelton, had passed away in the night. He had been sick, with cancer, for a while and he had never said a word to me about it. I will miss him…we were involved in several thing together until he moved to Florida about twenty five years ago. It was my association with him that led to a couple of the songs I wrote. I corresponded with Brian and Julie and Sam Friedman about this sad news.

Ray Hays cleared out some of the snow in the lane and brought my car from the barn. I, later, went to the post office and also got the accumulation out of the box out by the barn. UPS delivered a package from Brian…home made wine. Not having a cork puller, I will wait a few days to have my final birthday celebration of the year.

Saturday: Made a mistake!! Parked my car in the usual place and it was covered with a bunch of fresh snow. I intended to try to break some ice today but now it is snow covered. Maybe tomorrow! Donna called to see if she and Kent should take me to church on Sunday…I told her I would not attempt it. Corresponded with a writer/blogger in Virginia.

Sunday: Did not attempt the trip to church, lazed away the day, mostly. Did chip off most of the thick ice that was on the front stoop but the path to the parking area was hopeless. Watched the Super Bowl.

A HEALTHCARE BABYSTEP

Well, the Republicans did force a vote on doing completely away with Obamacare…all 47 Republicans voted to get rid of it and 51 democrats voted to keep it. Two did not vote. Guess whether or not this will be a 2012 campaign issue.

Although the above vote would have been good had it gone the other way, the process was not a total waste. A democrat presented a near copy of a bill that a Republican had voted down last year and it passed 87-13. Of course, the 13 were all democrats, or socialists or “independents.” Linden can’t tell the difference. This bill did away with an extremely burdensome part of Obamacare; the part that required multitudes of 1099s be filed by businesses, churches, farms, state and local governments. It is nice to know that the entire bill has been found to be unconstitutional!

LINDEN’S LIFE
Thursday was another day where I hardly ventured out…did get just outside the front door to see how thick the ice was. Chipped some of it away…it was about one inch thick. Maybe tomorrow! Graders came and cleared to some degree the church and Pier 14 parking lots. So, if can walk maybe twenty five across the sheet ice, I may find a relatively good walking surface. May try it tomorrow afternoon. Our usual Thursday morning breakfast meeting was canceled and I don’t plan on trying to make it to Men’s Prayer Breakfast on Friday.

STRONG LEADERS NEEDED

At this point in the history of our country it is absolutely necessary that those who are elected (or appointed) be strong enough to try to do what is right…not what is politically expedient.

In this vein, it is Linden’s opinion that our leaders, if this administration continues to try to implement Obamacare after it has been found to be unconstitutional, should immediately start the process of removing our President from office.

Few examples of how a strong leader should think and act are better than the one provided in the link below.

II TIMOTHY

This short second letter to Timothy was written from Rome by Paul in about A.D. 66. The love Paul has for “his son”, Timothy, is clearly evident as is the hope that Timothy will arrive in Rome before the martyrdom of Paul.

The letter, is one of encouragement for Timothy to continue in the way Paul has shown him. The book closes with greetings to others and words for Timothy.

LINDEN’S LIFE

The ice outside my door stretched as far as the eye could see. Therefore, I ventured outside not at all on Tuesday. No walk to get the morning paper, no walk to check the mailbox, no walk to the barn to get the car; nothing!

Had a nice talk with Julie and sent her a couple of E-mails. Read some, wrote some, cooked some, and fiddled with paperwork more than I enjoyed. Wednesday is predicted to be worse than Tuesday.

It was difficult to sleep well Tuesday night…the house is surrounded by old trees which were ice laden. Due to the high winds, ice and limbs were constantly breaking off and pelting the house…sounded almost like gun shots. Wednesday is Groundhog Day…any of those critters that come out of their den into this cold is absolutely insane.

EGYPT/U.S.
It seems that the number one news story of the day is the unrest that is present in Egypt. A great number of people are protesting against the government. Linden is not exactly sure as to what the basis for the protest is.

A number of U.S. government officials have lightly addressed the subject and they seem to not all be in agreement. This is not very surprising as they seem to often be confused.

Linden believes that the result could very well be bad for our country and could easily put Israel in an even more tenuous position. Hope not!

Links address Tea Party concern regarding some GOP officeholders, a newcomer outlining spending cuts, and a not very surprising article comparing electric cars with stage coaches. The music is not only beautiful but the images of fingers on the piano keyboard are worth seeing.

LINDEN’S LIFE
Other than going by the church office, the post office, the mailbox, and to the Mission House to do a load of wash, almost all of the day was spent inside. It was cold out. The weather predictions were for a bad ice storm so the car is parked in the barn…clearing snow and ice from a car in freezing weather is a poor hobby. See my February donation focus below.
